STDs affect millions of americans each year. They can have serious effects. This is especially true for women, who often don't have early signs of STDs. Many STDs may have no signs at all. An infected person may look and feel healthy and still pass an STD to you!
STDs are diseases that can be spread through vaginal anal or oral contact. Some STDs can also spread by other
types of contact for example, from skin-to-skin contact with infected sores, contact with blood or body fluids,
or by sharing needles or syringes.
A person can get an STD or HIV even if:
- She douches after having sex.
- He or she urinates or washes their sexual body parts after sex.
- A person has oral or anal sex.
Know your partner. Stay faithful to one sex partner who:
- Is not infected.
- Have no other sex partners.
- Has never injected drugs.
Some people may not be truthful about, or remember, their past. You and your partner should get tested for STDs to be 100% sure.Use male latex condoms if you decide to have sex.
Condoms aren't 100% effective, but they can help protect against HIV and other STDs. Although, some STD's, can be caused by contact with infected areas not covered by a condom. Be sure to use a new latex condom properly for each act of vaginal, anal or oral sex. Remember, you can get STDs (including HIV) from anal and oral sex, too. If you cannot use a male latex condom, find out about polyurethane condoms for women, or polyurethane or synthetic latex condoms for men.
